Vehicle Highlights

More power for the Z06 model highlights the 2002 Corvette. Three body styles return: convertible with manual fabric top and glass rear window, hatchback coupe with removable roof panel, and fixed-roof Z06 hardtop. All have a 5.7-liter V8. Convertibles and hatchbacks stay at 350 hp; the Z06 has 405, up 20 hp from '01. The Z06 comes only with the 6-speed manual transmission, the others also offer a 4-speed automatic. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and an antiskid/traction system are standard. Z06 now comes with the head-up instrument display that's optional on other 'Vettes, plus revisions to its unique chassis tuning. Other models offer two suspension options, but are no longer available with magnesium wheels. A CD player replaces a cassette as standard equipment.

 C5 Little known information:

The 1997 Corvette features several first-time high tech innovations, such as black lights for the instrument panel and a "plastic" (composite) intake manifold.

The first 200 production C5 Corvettes were painted red, not the traditional white color for the first production run.

The 1997 Corvette is the first one designed from the ground up as a Corvette, with very little borrowing of parts from other cars. One of the few "Off the Shelf" parts are the exterior door handles which are the same ones used on the Oldsmobile Aurora.

The first use of a transaxle in a production Corvette occurred in the '97. However, the first plans for one were in the Q-Corvette in 1958, planned for the 1960 model. Transaxles showed up in Corvette prototypes in the mid '60s in running models.

The first 4 speed in a Corvette was built by Borg Warner in 1957. The first transaxle in a production Corvette was also built by Borg Warner, forty years later in 1997. Both were introduced late in the model year.

Borg Warner has produced a transmission for each generation of Corvette: C1 - 1957 to 1962, C2 - 1963, C3 - 1980 to 1981, C4 - 1984 to 1988, and C5 - 1997 to 1998.

The 1997 Corvette is the first Corvette to have windshield wipers that sweep in the same direction instead of opposing directions.

The 1998 Corvette convertible is the first to offer the same sport suspension package as the coupe. Since the C5 was designed from the start as a convertible model, the ragtop is nearly identical in structural rigidity to the coupe.

The first Corvette to sport a real trunk since 1962 again appeared with the 1998 Corvette convertible.

November 4, 1997 - The 9752nd 1998 Corvette rolled down the assembly matching the total 1997 Model production run.

The last "Fairway Green" C5 came down the assembly line as a '98 model on November 10, 1997. The color was discontinued due to poor sales.

It takes 55 hours to build the new C5 Corvette, down from 70 hours for the previous C4 model.

For the first time in history, the 1999 Corvette is available in three distinct body styles... Coupe, Convertible, and Hardtop (aka, "Fixed Roof Coupe").

The performance axle ratio for C5 Corvettes with automatic transmission is 3.15:1 (the standard ratio is 2.73:1).

The 2000 Corvette featured new color choices to celebrate Y2K... Millennium Yellow and Dark Bowling Green Metallic... plus a new Torch Red interior option.

2001 will forever be remembered as the year the Z06 performance hardtop was introduced with its 385HP LS6 engine and 6 speed manual transmission.

Corvette's use of a titanium exhaust for the Z06 was the first ever for a mass production automobile.

Active Handling became standard equipment in 2001.

C5 SECRETS

C5 Secrets and Computer CODE

1 The little yellow "helper light" on the bottom of the rear-view mirror that illuminates the shifter area

2 That you can put your key in the driver's door and turn it twice towards the front to unlock the passenger door and a third time to pop the trunk.

3 That you can pop the trunk and also pop the gas cap cover by pulling on metal lines hidden in the back.

4 The little slotted cover on the dash behind the steering wheel is where the inside air temperature sensor is located.

5 All of the option codes are in the glove box.

6 Tire inflation recommended pressures are on the driver's door

7 The thing that looks like a little LED near the DIC buttons is a light sensor

8 The thing that looks like a little LED near the defroster vent is a UV sensor for determining A/C usage to compensate for the heating effect of the sun

9 The build sheet is in the front re-bar

10 If you leave your turn signal on, in about 1 minute it will start to ding (loud enough to hear over the stereo) to let you know you have old timers disease.

11 You can reset the oil life by pumping the gas pedal 3 times (but not with the engine running)

12 Hold down the reset button while on one of the trip odometers and it changes that reading to the miles you've traveled since last starting the engine.

13 Hold down the Active Handling button for 5 sec. to engage "Competitive Driving" on cars equipped with active handling (2000 and previous years must be stopped.)

14 If you pull the seatbelts all the way out while you're buckled in, they ratchet back in to hold you tighter into the seat.

15 Simply remove fuse #2 under the hood and your DRLs will be out permanently. Only thing affected is that when you unlock at night using the key fob your front turn signal lights and back up lights will not will not flash. Your front turn signals will operate normally, however.

16 The side-view mirrors can twist both forward and backward, decreasing the chance of damage if struck.

17 There is a release opening with a flap to let air out of the car when the hatch is closed. It is located just above the driver side rear compartment, behind the carpet and on the side of the car. Not that it really works well.

18 Also you can ground your amp to a screw/bolt that holds the rear middle compartment to the frame.

19 If you have a 6-speed car you can pop the trunk when the car is running by lifting the e-brake.

20 There is a spot on the driver side just out of the middle compartment under the carpet for the lug nut key. You should have a compartment on the drivers & passenger‚'s side (in the trunk) and a center compartment. On the left (drivers) side of the center compartment, on the left side where the center cover fits, there is an 'indent' that holds the wheel lock key.

21 If you turn on the headlights, then go to parking light position, the lamps remain up but the headlights are not left on.

22 If you have the passive entry feature: If you lock your keys in the car, wait a few minutes and then shake the car. That will unlock the car.

23 HUD has a shift light for manuals.

24 You can easily shift the M6 trans up or down without the clutch if you match revs. (Not great for longevity, however.)

25 You can eject the cd from the in-dash player without turning on any power. Don't even need key in the ignition.

26 The cruise will disengage if you purposely make sharp side to side turns while cruising at say 60-80 mph.

27 When the engine is shut off, you can get the odometer reading by turning on the parking lights.

28 You can program setting #3 (both memory buttons at once) in the seat memory to run the seat back and steering wheel forward for getting in/out of the car with the engine running.

29 If you hate DRLs you can pull the e-brake ONE click and they go off


To recalibrate your C-5 Remote Keyless Entry Fob use the following steps:

1) Turn ignition on

2) Turn radio off

3) Press Driver Information Center (DIC) RESET button ( 6 )

4) Press OPTIONS button on the DIC until display is blank ( 4 )

5) Press and hold RESET button for 3 seconds ( 6  )

6) Press OPTIONS button until FOB TRAINING is displayed ( 4 )

7) Press RESET button to begin programming sequence. ( 6 )

8) Simultaneously press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK ( A & B )

 buttons on first remote for 13 seconds until message

appears stating programming is complete. The computer

will ask to program second FOB. If you don't have a second

FOB follow on to step 9.

9) Turn ignition off and remove key for ignition.

10) Test remote or remotes

 

The ability to view engine operating data such as oil pressure and coolant temperature, in digital form on the instrument panel has been a feature of Corvettes since 1984. Starting in 1992, the instrument panel could display limited diagnostic data relating to the car's on-board computer systems.
The C5's capacity to display diagnostic codes is significantly expanded. The new Corvette has 11 Computer Modules that transmit diagnostics:
Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
Traction Control System (TCS), which combines traction control, ABS and on cars built after 1997, the optional Active Handling System
Real Time Damping (RTD)
Body Control Module (BCM)
Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)
Radio
Heating-ventilation-air conditioning (HVAC)
Left Door Control Module (LDCM)
Right Door Control Module (RDCM)
Seat Control Module (SCM)
Remote Function Actuation (RFA).

The Instrument Panel Cluster display, the 20-character fluorescent screen above the steering column that says Corvette by Chevrolet every time you start the car, is an important device. Its primary function is to display warning and status messages from the various modules. For cars built
before 12/15/97, there are 48 of these warning/status messages. A few additional messages come from cars built after that date and equipped with the Active Handling option. A list of the warning/status messages can be found in your Owner's Manual or in the Service Manual for your model year.
 

The display can show powertrain operating information and tire pressures by simply pressing different buttons on the Driver Information Center (DIC) to the right of the instrument panel. In addition, using the options button, you can configure the C5's keyless entry and security systems. Use of the display and buttons for these purposes is discussed in your Owner's Manual
 

Do-It-Yourself owners will be most interested in the display of diagnostic trouble codes for all modules that transmit them. The Diagnostic Display Mode is entered with the following procedure:
1) Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine.
2) Press the RESET button to turn off any warning messages
3) Press and hold  OPTIONS
4) While holding OPTIONS, press FUEL four times within a 10-second period.
 

Initially, on-board diagnostics go into an Automatic Mode which shows diagnostic codes in a pre-set sequence: PCM - TCS - RTD - BCM - IPC - RADIO - HVAC - LDCM - RDCM - SCM - RFA. All codes will be displayed for each
If none are present in a given module, you will see No More Codes on the display.
There are two kinds of diagnostic codes, Current and History designated with a letter suffix, C or ;H. A current code indicates a malfunction is present in the module displaying data. A history code indicates a problem existed sometime in the last 40 or 50 ignition cycles.When not accompanied by a current code of the same number, it's potential evidence of a previous problem, now resolved, that was not removed by clearing the codes.
More likely it's an indication of an intermittent malfunction.
Intermittent codes are the most challenging of the diagnostics. An intermittent code may have happened once, may have happened more than once but is inconsistent or may be happening on a regular basis but not at the time the codes are displayed. History codes can also be caused by a current malfunction in a system that is not operating at the time codes are displayed. An example is the rear window defogger which doesn't operate until the Body Control Module detects engine rpm. For history codes set by a module that does not operate with the key on and engine off, a special diagnostic tool called a Scan Tester is necessary to properly diagnose the malfunction.
Once the system has displayed all modules, it goes into the manual mode which allows selection of each module using combinations of Driver Information Center buttons.Manual mode can also be entered during the automatic sequence by pressing any button except E/M. Once the display shows Manual Diagnostics, select a module by pressing the OPTIONS button to go forward or the TRIP button to go back. Once a module is selected, a code is displayed, and if more than one are present;
press GAGES to go forward or FUEL to go back.
To exit the diagnostic mode at any time, press E/M. If you want to erase codes in a given module, press RESET
To reset the codes once in manual mode, press and hold RESET until it displays NO CODES Press OPTIONSto go to the next module. Repeat the steps until you have reset the codes in all the computer modules.
NOTE!! Only reset the codes IF you want to - it is NOT necessary to do this. Clearing a code does not repair a problem. You are simply erasing the evidence of it in the module's memory.
Once you have the codes, the next question is: What to do with the information?
First, consult the factory service manual. Any serious C5 Do-It-Yourself owner should invest in the Corvette Service Manual of the appropriate model year. Unfortunately, it is an expensive set of three books totaling (1997 edition) 3890 pages and stacking  4 1/4 inches high. In spite of its cost and size, the Service Manual is a requirement if you want to understand and work on your C5. They are available through Chevrolet dealers and mail order sources, such as Ecklers and Mid America.

The diagnostics for some diagnostic codes call for a scan tester. Also known as scan tools or scanners these units are really hand-held diagnostic computers. A little larger than a portable cassette recorder, powered by the car battery and connected to the diagnostic link connector (DLC); they collect computer module data and display it on a small screen. Scan testers are operated by a small keypad. Software is usually in plug-in cartridges covering a specific model year.
Where you might get stuck needing one of these pieces of equipment is when the Service Manual calls for operating a specific module with a scan tester. If you are trying to solve a diagnostic code and determine that a scan tester is required but don't have access to one; take the car to a service facility for repairs.

Turn the key to the ON position, but don't start the engine. Clear any existing messages by pressing
the RESET button. Hold the OPTIONS button down, and press the FUEL button 4
times. This will get you into the CODES section of the DIC. The computer will
automatically display all the codes your car has created. It will cycle through
each code every 3 seconds. Any code that ends in H is a history code (something
that has occurred in the past) but is fine now. Once the computer has finished
going through all of it's codes, press RESET to enter Manual Configuration mode.
It should start with a module and show NO CODES or # CODES
 

To optionally reset the codes once in manual mode, press and hold RESET until it
displays NO CODES Press OPTIONS to go to the next module. Repeat the steps in
this paragraph until you have reset the codes in all the computer modules. NOTE!! Only reset the codes IF you want to - it is NOT necessary to do this.

Resetting Tire Pressure Monitors ( TPM's )

1) Turn ignition on


2) Press "Reset" button in order to clear any IPC display warning messages


3) Press and release the "Options" button on the DIC to scroll through the display options until the IPC display is blank


4) Press and hold the DIC "Reset" button for 3 seconds


5) Press the "Options" button again until TIRE TRAINING message appears


6) Press "Reset" button until the IPC "Learn L Front Tire" message appears in order to begin the programming


7) Install the J41760 Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) System Programming Tool (large magnet will do) over the left front valve stem


8) The horn will sound, indicating the left front TPM sensor is programmed (if this takes more than 15 seconds, pull magnet back and try again, it will give you three tries. Then you must start over)


9) When the horn sounds, proceed to program the next TPM sensor in the following order as directed by the IPC messages: -Learn R Front Tire -Learn R Rear Tire -Learn L Rear Tire
 

Programming can be canceled by turning ignition off, waiting 2 minutes with no sensors being learned, finishing all 4 wheels or through the DIC. If the programming is canceled with less than 4 sensors learned, it will only accept the codes programmed up to that point.
